Stage Door (1937)

“Wisecracks ricochet at breakneck speed as the aspiring performers commiserate on demoralizing roles, sleazy agents, and the slop served in the dining hall." --The Village Voice

Directed by Gregory La Cava

Director Gregory La Cava’s flair for improvisation and high wire performances reaches its zenith in Stage Door, a heady ensemble drama set in a New York boarding house that teams with the wised-up patter of struggling actresses.  Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers spark and spar as unlikely roommates riding waves of success and disappointment---mostly disappointment---in their pursuit of stardom until tragedy strikes.  Stage Door was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
