7th Heaven  (1927)

Director Frank Borzage won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Director for 7th Heaven, perhaps the purest expression of his romantic concerns.  Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor star as a street cleaner and a gamine who create their own private heaven on the seventh-floor garret of a Paris tenement that not even the horrors of WWI can completely penetrate.
