Sunset Blvd. (1950)
September 12, 2014 - 7:30 pm
In-person:
Deborah Nadoolman Landis.

Sunset Blvd. (1950)

Directed by Billy Wilder.

Director Billy Wilder’s timeless classic frames at its center a woman lost between historical epochs.   Star Gloria Swanson, a lifelong clotheshorse, brought tremendous gusto to the self-referential role of Norma Desmond, a half-forgotten silent film star enlisting a small-time screenwriter to craft her comeback film.  Decked out in chic, modern dresses, which costume designer Edith Head trimmed with dated accessories, Swanson is a portrait in hopeless self-delusion.

Paramount Pictures Corp. Producer: Charles Brackett. Screenwriter: Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder, D.M. Marshman Jr. Cinematographer: John F. Seitz. Editor: Arthur Schmidt. Costume Designer: Edith Head. Cast: William Holden, Gloria Swanson, Erich von Stroheim, Nancy Olson, Fred Clark.

35mm, b/w, 115 min.
