The Player (1992)

Director Robert Altman’s disdain for American studio film production is palpable in this indictment of the system, which was warmly received by audiences and the industry itself.  Studio executive Tim Robbins, already reviled as a hack and persecuted by a resentful writer’s hate mail, sniffs out the sender and commits a heinous act, setting up a dandy detective yarn and a jaundiced assessment of the crushing machinery of American moviemaking.
