Thieves Like Us (1974)

“Each scene plays out with equal measure given to humor, pathos, eccentricity of character, the unpredictability of life...” –
Slant

Directed by Robert Altman.

Director Robert Altman’s humanistic portrayal of a group of rural bank-robbers in the 1930s characteristically tempers its sketch of big-dreaming small timers with an affectionate appreciation of their emotional stakes; especially a tender love story that forms at the heart of the story under the pendulous promise of almost certain violence.  Period atmosphere and detail warm this ultimately tragic tale with the glow of nostalgic Americana.

Lion’s Gate Films. Producer: Jerry Bick. Screenwriter: R. Altman, Joan Tewkesbury, Calder Willingham. Cinematographer: Jean Boffety. Editor: Lou Lombardo. Cast: Keith Carradine, Shelley Duvall, John Schuck, Bert Remsen, Louise Fletcher.

35mm, color, 124 min.

Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson (1976)

“[An] ambitious movie that is often very funny and always fascinating.” –
New York Times

Directed by Robert Altman.

“Buffalo” Billy Cody’s Wild West Show is an entertainment phenomenon, featuring staged “battles” between Indians and cavalry.  But swaggering Buffalo Bill (Paul Newman) faces an unexpected contest of symbolism when the actual vanquished Chief Sitting Bull is hired to become part of the show.  The Chief’s disconcerting presence is exacerbated by that of a big-city reporter, in this wry portrait of empty American bravado.

Producer: Robert Altman.  Screenwriter: Alan Rudolph and Robert Altman, suggested by the play “The Indians” by Arthur Kopit.  Cinematographer: Paul Lohmann.  Editor: Peter Appleton, Dennis M. Hill.  Cast: Paul Newman, Joel Grey, Burt Lancaster, Kevin McCarthy, Harvey Keitel, Geraldine Chaplin.

35mm, color, 123 min.
