“Exploding Raymond Carver’s spare stories and minimally drawn characters onto the screen with startling imagination, Robert Altman has made his most complex and full-bodied human comedy since 'Nashville'” – Variety
Directed by Robert Altman.
Director Robert Altman’s elliptical narrative tendencies and his unsentimental treatment of characters found a felicitous pairing with the short stories of Raymond Carver, which form the basis of this film. A number of disconnected Angelenos deal with entropy in their lives, careers, marriages and affairs, in a seemingly cheery Los Angeles of swimming pools and nightclubs. The ultimately elegiac film portends later work by director Paul Thomas Anderson, among others.
