Curator Lynne Kirste discusses collecting, preserving, and making accessible amateur films, illustrating her talk with clips from home movies and amateur films preserved by the Academy Film Archive. Footage of a Japanese American family in Los Angeles in the 1920s, behind-the-scenes of Gone with the Wind, James Wong Howe in San Francisco and more, will illuminate a discussion of the joys and challenges of amateur film in an archival context.
