Directed by W.S. Van Dyke
A priest in hedonistic San Francisco, Tracy is the perfect foil for Barbary Coast saloonkeeper Clark Gable. When hungry, virtuous Jeanette MacDonald becomes a chorine in Gable’s joint, much to the priest’s disapproval, she finds herself a pivot between the morally opposed men. Basically saddled with a sexless role, Tracy imbued it with an understated but undeniably passionate fervor that greatly increased his prestige.
