As the struggle against oppression continues in Iran and the Iranian diaspora, Iranian filmmakers around the globe continue to respond with powerful images and stories of perseverance and resistance. Above and below the line, cast and crew, they are inspiring examples of integrity and courage for other artists facing the mounting threats of autocracy around the globe. Throughout the selections in this year’s UCLA Celebration of Iranian Cinema, the influence of the ongoing Woman, Life, Freedom movement and its insistence on women’s rights as human rights can be profoundly felt. Gradually, on-screen, hijabs are disappearing, women are dancing and new possible futures are being imagined. Still, the work of change remains. While the Archive is pleased to share these recent titles with our audience, it is honored to present three timeless films from a true giant of Iranian cinema, Dariush Mehrjui, as part of a closing weekend tribute to his life and legacy. The Archive is also once again happy to present selected finalists from the 2024 edition of the Farhang Foundation Short Film Festival. The power of the moving image to connect people and to lift them up in times of crisis is nowhere more evident than in the work of Iranian filmmakers. The Archive is proud to be able to celebrate their artistry and courage at the Billy Wilder Theater.
