Akeelah and the Bee  (2006)

11-year-old Akeelah Anderson participates in her school spelling bee to avoid detention – and much to her surprise, she wins! Despite her mother’s objections and the challenges of her home and school life, Akeelah uses determination, help from her friends, and her mentor Dr. Larabee to spell her way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.  What Akeelah discovers in her journey is that while winning feels good, having faith in yourself feels even better.
