Trembling Before G-d (2001)
In his groundbreaking documentary, Sandi Simcha DuBowski examines the lives of lesbian and gay Orthodox Jews, as they work to reconcile their sexuality with their religious beliefs and upbringing. Groundbreaking in its presentation of experiences that had previously been intensely private, the film interviews subjects in the U.S., Great Britain and Israel, and reveals an area of Jewish life that is undergoing intense debate and development, with some finding answers and others hitting walls in the quest to harmonize lives and find acknowledgement as gay people in Orthodox teachings.
35mm, color, 84 min. DIR: Sandi Simcha DuBowski.
