This fanciful adaptation of Jules Verne's 1874 novel, atypical for director Cy Endfield, called upon his knowledge of American genres, European locations and the dramatization of group dynamics. Here, a group of Union Soldiers in the American Civil War escapes a Confederate compound in a hot air balloon, landing on an island full of outsize and mysterious beasts, animated by Ray Harryhausen.
