Festival darling Zhang Meng (The Piano in a Factory, 2011) continues his exploration of northeastern China’s post-socialist landscapes, here following a kindergarten director-cum-gangster, Chen Shengli, newly released from prison. Out to settle old scores, he starts a romance with an equally tough young woman. Barred from public screenings at the Shanghai film festival after a sex scandal involving actor Huang Haibo, the film was, nonetheless, awarded the festival’s Jury Grand Prize.
