"A better film about war beneath the ocean and about guys in the "silent service" has not been made." — The New York Times
Directed by Robert Wise
A touch of Melville braces this submarine drama in which a seasoned captain (Gable) hunts a Japanese sub in pursuit of revenge while his young lieutenant (Lancaster) increasingly doubts his superior officer's fitness for command. Lancaster and Gable play cat and mouse with enemy subs and each other, both performances heightening the psychological stakes of Robert Wise's taut, claustrophobic action.
