The UCLA Film & Television Archive’s News and Public Affairs (NAPA) Collection consists of over 100,000 news programs and broadcasts taped off air from 1979 to 2003. Titles from the collection can be made available for research viewing on the UCLA campus in the Instructional Media Lab, located in room 270 of the Powell Library. Viewing requests must be made in advance through the Archive Research and Study Center (ARSC).

Collection highlights

A few of the many programs held in the NAPA collection include: CNN Special Reports, C-SPAN's Washington Journal, Nightline, Today, America's Black Forum, Larry King Live, Tony Brown's Journal, local Los Angeles news from stations such as KNBC, KCBS, KABC, and KTLA, network nightly news programs, and local and national Spanish language news. The collection also holds extended coverage of important news events, such as the 2000 presidential election/Florida recount.

NAPA Study Guides are available to assist in locating holdings relevant to Rodney King/Los Angeles uprising, the events of 9/11, African American Public Affairs Broadcasting, and Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The guides are designed to introduce users to the collection and provide a starting point for research on these topics.

The UC Library Search catalog also includes a significant number of television news and public affairs programming ranging from 1949 into the 2000s. Researchers interested in news and public affairs programming prior to 1980 must search the general collection. Researchers interested in broadcasts from 1980 - 2003 should search both the NAPA collection database and the general collection catalog.
