Vincent & Theo (1990)

Directed by
Robert Altman.

This period drama on the lives of Vincent van Gogh (Tim Roth) and his brother, the art dealer Theo (Paul Rhys), details the torments of the two inextricably bound brothers, each dealing with bourgeois constraints in his own, pained way. Inevitably compared to director Robert Altman’s own journey as a filmmaker, the picture is a sober assessment of artistic process, which often consigns one to obscurity without apology.

Producer: Ludi Boeken. Screenwriter: Julian Mitchell. Cinematographer: Jean Lepine. Editor: Francoise Coispeau, Geraldine Peroni. Cast: Tim Roth, Paul Rhys, Johanna ter Steege.

35mm, color, 138 min.

Preceded by:

Zinc Ointment (1971)

Marianne Dolan.

Behind-the-scenes footage from the set of McCabe and Mrs. Miller offers a glimpse of director Robert Altman and crew on location, contending with nature and complex production demands, but not without an air of delight.

16mm, color, 9 min.
