The Archive is proud to partner with UCLA Confucius Institute to present the first ever China Onscreen Biennial (COB). The event represents an unprecedented bicoastal collaboration among American film cultural institutions to promote US-China cultural dialogue through the art of film. Launching citywide in Los Angeles from October 13-31 (with selected programs reprising in Washington DC from October 26-November 11), the COB brings some of the best examples of contemporary Mainland Chinese filmmaking and archival rarities to American audiences, many as North American and US premieres.

One can liken the COB program itself to a journey, led by some of China’s finest filmmakers, through the monumental changes Chinese society has undergone in recent decades. The wide-ranging works on view—encompassing short and feature-length animation, documentaries and narrative films, and works originated for theatrical release as well as for viewing on the internet and as art installations—call into question long-standing taxonomies of Chinese cinema, and suggest great flux and transformation in the current Chinese film scene. Beyond the US media’s drumbeat of China as simply one humongous economic growth machine, the COB offers a refreshing multiplicity of voices—sometimes in synch, sometimes discordant, but always vital and individual.

COB program curated by: Cheng-Sim Lim (Chief Curator), Bérénice Reynaud (Curatorial Advisor, Film at REDCAT); Shannon Kelley, Paul Malcolm (UCLA Film & Television Archive); Ellen Harrington (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences); Tom Vick (Freer and Sackler Galleries); Jonathan Hall (Pomona College).

Note: COB events will also take place at the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood, REDCAT in downtown Los Angeles, a pop-up gallery in the Mandarin Plaza, Chinatown, and Pomona College. For the complete COB calendar, visit the UCLA Confucius Institute’s website: www.confucius.ucla.edu/cob.
